Tax Resolution Companies – Beware!

By Nehemiah Jefferson, Esq., LL.M.

Consumers should be cautious in their dealings with so called “Tax Resolution” companies promising tax debt relief. To be more straightforward, these consumers are being misled by heavy advertising on the radio with unsubstantiated claims.

Many of these firms are collecting large fees upfront and taking little to no action on client cases outside of collecting documents. Oftentimes, consumers are dealing with sales professionals. When talking to these companies, consumers should ask about the education, experience, and licenses of who will directly handle their case.

It does not make sense to pay fees that are half of the tax debt. With competent and experienced counsel, and the right information oftentimes a taxpayers’ tax resolution options can be evaluated and assessed within a few hours.

Unfortunately, I have received new clients as a result of these companies’ failure to resolve the tax issues or at the very least provide an honest and ethical directive to the prospective client.

I recommend consumers contact a local tax attorney when dealing with IRS matters instead of a toll free number to California.
